I’ve been away – the annual scouting summer camp took me away to nothing less than the Faroe Islands. And there were more reasons than one from not posting the Monday Motorway™ Music list from up there – but a main one would be that there are no motorways on the Faroe Islands 😉
The photo above is from our hike crossing the mountains between Vestmanna and Kvivik – in solidifying fog. Basically, what you see is a line of scouts, with line of sight from one to the other, waiting until the ones out in front (somewhere in the fog) found the next cairn. Then the whole troop would move forward to that. Rinse and repeat 🙂
And no, we were in no risk of getting lost. Map and compass kept us in the general direction – and unless we started reversing (which would be uphill, so rather easy to look out for), we couldn’t really miss the road that was the target. And the contour lines on the map showed no precipices or other dangerous areas, so we knew it was “just” a downhill hike.
So while it was not just a walk in the park – after all, the route held about 700 height-meters (400 m up, 300 or so down) – it was a nice challenge but also a rather safe one that was very useful for teaching the scouts about the techniques and possible dangers of mountain hiking.
Back in Denmark, on the motorways there is not much more to do than to enjoy the absence of traffic as summer vacation is on. It’s a breeze going to the office 🙂 Speaking of vacation, there is more to come – posts may or may not appear in the meantime, depending on interwebs and writing time availability. If not, summaries of Foreign Motorway™ Music will appear at some later time – promise.
